Leiden

Europort to Leiden

Our day began with an early morning adventure as we hopped off the ferry, ready to embark on an unforgettable cycling journey. Our first destination was Leiden, but we decided to take a scenic route through Delft and Den Haag. Little did we know that this detour would add an extra layer of excitement to our trip!

As we pedaled our way towards Delft, we couldn’t resist the allure of its rich history and vibrant culture. Delft is renowned for its remarkable hand-painted blue-and-white delftware pottery. You can see the artistic mastery of this craft in numerous shops and galleries scattered throughout the town.

Exploring Delft’s old town, we stumbled upon the awe-inspiring Oude Kerk. This medieval church not only boasts remarkable architecture but also serves as the final resting place of the renowned Dutch Master painter, Johannes Vermeer. The solemn atmosphere and the historical significance of the Oude Kerk make it a must-see for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Nieuwe Kerk, the “New Church” in Delft, offers a fascinating window into the royal history of the Netherlands. Once the seat of the royal House of Orange, this 15th-century church impresses visitors with its grandeur. Gazing upon the ornate tombs of the Dutch royal family, you can’t help but feel a sense of reverence for the past.

Leaving Delft, we continued our journey, taking the route towards Den Haag, also known as The Hague. This cosmopolitan city is home to many government institutions and international organizations. While Den Haag may be known for its politics, it also offers a wealth of cultural treasures. From world-class museums to beautiful parks and gardens, there’s something to captivate every visitor.

As we cycled along the picturesque North Sea coastline, the invigorating ocean breeze accompanied our journey. The rugged beauty of the coastal landscape provided a refreshing contrast to the urban charm of the cities we had explored.

After immersing ourselves in the coastal bliss, we reluctantly left the sea behind and ventured back inland towards our final destination—Leiden. This historic city is famous for its centuries-old architecture and its prestigious academic institution, Leiden University, which dates back to 1575. Walking through the streets of Leiden feels like stepping into a time capsule, with charming canals, towering windmills, and impeccably preserved buildings. Don’t miss a visit to the iconic Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden, established in 1590. Here, you can trace the origins of tulip mania in Western Europe, as the garden played a pivotal role in introducing the tulip to the region.

Before bidding farewell to Leiden, make sure to pay a visit to the Museum de Lakenhal. This cultural gem showcases an impressive collection of artworks by Dutch Masters, including the legendary Rembrandt, who was born right here in Leiden. Be prepared to be captivated by the mastery of brushstrokes and the rich historical narratives depicted in these artworks.

So there you have it—a day filled with adventure, art, history, and natural beauty. The journey from Delft to Den Haag and finally to Leiden will forever hold a special place in our memories.
